3D Work

Modeling  |  Rigging  |  Animating

Toon Rob

A low poly cartoonized version of myself for use in my own personal projects. It has undergone several major iterations including entire reworks of both the geometry and the rigs.

Originally animated with a custom rig built entirely from scratch including deform skeleton and all subsequent mechanical/control bones, drivers, etc.

It's current iteration (identifiable by it's longer proportions and hands featuring five fingers) is rigged using Blender's automated rig generation suite - 'Rigify', and modified to add custom controllers or to customize already existing elements.

Personal Website

Over the past 6 months the project I have been most continuously devoted to has been the development of my personal website.
Previously a very typical and boring series of slideshows, I had the inspiration for this interactive portfolio in October of last year and have been building and revising ever since.

Realizing my idea required the creation of hundreds of individual 3D models, many of which involved custom rigs to be built in order to animate, oftentimes with a turnaround of less than a day.
This process required countless hours of troubleshooting an innumerable number of issues related to not only 3D modeling, but also scene management, and rendering. Solving each one of these problems without any outside aid (beyond occasionally-successful Google searches) has sharpened my 3D Artistry skills as a whole and made me more effective as a creator than I have ever been.

Weekly Render Challenge

The summer before my final semester of school I decided to participate in a self-imposed 'Daily Render Challenge', in which I woke up every morning to open a blank Blender canvas, and before I went to bed that night I would post whatever I had managed to make.
The final scene (Greenwood Station) required more than one day, and any audio featured in the videos was added later and not within the original day's time limit, but for the most-part I was faithful to my original intention.

Senior Project

After finishing my weekly render challenge I decided to take advantage of Blender's latest addition; 'Geometry Nodes', in order to build myself a utility that would generate the landscape for the little mini-scenes I'd been building within a matter of seconds instead of hours.
As I perfected my little 'Micro-World Generator', I realized the animation-potential the tool itself actually carried, and soon a little story of a guy being tossed back and forth between scenes on an ever-changing landscape began to take shape.
I had one month left before school started back up again at that point so I had to work fast, but through many sleepless nights I ended up with what would end up becoming my 'Senior Project'. It was a perfect culmination of all the 3D art skills I had learned thus-far, as well as a testament to my own capacity to see a project through to completion in a crunch.

The music featured in the video is something I had previously composed on my iPad in GarageBand and re-edited to match the length of the video (while the video was timed to sync with the beat/tempo of the music)

- Into Space -

A music video I made to mark the end of my first year at CCA. There is obviously much about this I could improve with my current skillset but it still sits as a reminder of how far I have come in just a few years.

The song itself was written (by me) during Lockdown and I consider it to be something of an anthem of the times as well.

E-Z Rig

As a 2D artist, the job of finding figure references is often tedious, and usually ends up with a "close enough"-kind of approach to poses. The solution obviously is a mannequin, but physical ones often don't bend or hold their poses effectively, while digital ones are usually built for animation and come loaded with WAY too many controls to be efficient for a 2D workflow.
My solution was to create this simplified digital mannequin with the easiest rig to understand possible.
